JAGUAR – Species Spotlight

JAGUAR (Panthera Onca) The jaguar is the Americas largest feline predator. This endangered cat (estimated population= +/-10000) has one of the most powerful bites in the animal kingdom which it uses to crush the skull of its prey. The jaguar is often confused with the leopard which lives in Asia and Africa. The black jaguar is very rare. In jaguars, the melanism is dominant and in leopards the color mutation is recessive. Melanism is the occurence of an increased amount of dark pigmentation. Some feel the black coloring of jaguars and leopards seems to take place more when it helps the cat to be dark such as in dense forest and jungles. Threats to this amazing cat include habitat loss and fragmentation of its range. While international trade in jaguars and their parts is illegal, the cat is still regularly killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers in Central and South America. On February 25, 2009 a regular colored spotted Jaguar (Macho B) was caught, radio-collared and released in southwest Arizona. Sadly, on March 2, 2009, was recaptured and euthanized after he was found to be suffering from kidney failure. Macho B seemed to be the only Jag that was seen in the US in some time. Some feel that the stress from the captures and sedation caused his weak kidney to fail. It is always risky to knock out a big cat. The United States/Mexico barrier wall will reduce the viability of any population currently residing in the United States. In January 2008 United

The farmers need better? help in protecting the cattle from jags. Give them the resources rather then telling them not to kill them. They are only protecting there livelihood. Better enforcement of the protected lands and more protected lands also will help.

What’s with protecting it? nature will wipe out everything that’s living on earth that’s just what nature does leave it alone and let it go peacefully, fucking with nature will only get us in? more trouble.

i hate farmers? that would shoot such a beautiful animal just because of the cattle. they think they can kill the cattle, but the jaguar can’t? you’re the one invading the jaguar’s home, that’s where the jaguar lives and has the right to kill for food, which they need to survive! i’m happy every time i see a video or a picture of an animal killing a person, i love seeing REAL predators get revenge on our disgusting, selfish, rotten species!

You know why we love animals, simple? they dont judge us,and rarely kill us,We dont even respect each other,no wonder that some love animals more,i can see why.if we use less,we can slow down the destruction a little, thats good ennit.Happy New Year To All.

@ChorltonBrook The border fence issue may be a problem with felines like the coelot and even more so with? the Jag, since so few live just in the States. We will wait and see what happens.

ChorltonBrook January 24, 2012 at 6:35 pm

@briczar22 I live in the UK so I don’t know … but will the new border fence with Mexico affect them? Like you said? their ranges and ability to find mates? (the ones in the US)
